Template for blocking in an illustration program.
It's great to block digitally when a scene is really complicated, or is changing a lot, because things can get messy on paper. Here is the blocking template we've used for the diagrams in The Master Course. It can be opened in Adobe Illustrator and any program that can import PDF art.
Before you start blocking digitally, it's important to remember that this blocking system was designed exactly to be incredibly easy to draw on paper, and there's something wonderfully organic and intimate about simply sitting down with a piece of paper and figuring out a scene. We do 99% of our own blocking using pencil and paper, and a $5 blocking template from any office store. So before you go head over heels into blocking on your computer, consider that the computer will often become a hindrance to your creativity, not an aid, because you're focusing more on the software than on the scene. But for really complicated scenes, it's just too difficult on paper. Either way, now you know how we feel!
